NHRF 2005: REVIEW (by Gypsy~Rose)

This past weekend, October 29th and 30th, people gathered in Kingston, NH for the First Annual NH Renaissance Faire and Samhain Celebration. From 10am through 5pm people in renaissance costumes wandered the site, (the Shire of the Three Maples), shopping for handcrafted goods, getting henna tattoos, fighting dragons, listening to minstrels, watching bellydancers, taking nature walks, playing games and watching a plot unfold before them.

On Saturday, from 5pm to 7pm, there was drumming, fire dancers, (Lotus Moon; www.lotusmoondance.com) and a Samhain, (pronounced Sow-an), ceremony to celebrate the ancient Holiday. About 300 patrons attended the event, about a third of those braving snow and chilly temps on Saturday, the rest waiting until Sunday's gorgeous weather. On the whole the event was a great success, with people asking to sign on for next year within a few hours of the faire starting!

This event was an all-volunteer event with the staff and merchants coming from as far as Rhose Island. One patron that attended came from Maryland! The event was coordinated by Gypsy~Rose, a local artisan who merchants at renaissance faires, (www.gypsyroses.org), and runs a local Pagan group which ran the ceremony.

The plot was written and coordinated by Will the Wizard, a Rhode Island magician and entertainer who has been frequenting renaissance faires for many years. The Shire of the Three Maples is home to an Nature and Art Camp in Kingston, NH, (www.threemaples.net), and was a gorgeous location for this event!

Plans were underway for next year's event almost immediately and now, after having such a positive response from the community, people involved and patrons, the NH Renaissance Faire has a new home online too: www.nhrenfaire.com.

The NH Renaissance Faire is already planning next year's event and is always open to new volunteers and merchants so please drop Gypsy~Rose a line if you're interested in helping in 2006. Hope to see you at, or before, the faire next year!
